This was by far my favorite part of Morocco. I might be biased since I love being surrounded by nature, but it just felt so good to hear nothing but birds chirping and water rushing from the mountains. Coming to the Atlas Mountains is a MUST if you are spending some quality time in a neighboring city. Its only a 2 hour drive from Marrakech!
WHERE I STAYED
When Richard Branson decides to put his name behind something you know its for a damn good reason. Well he has done it again, and this time with Kasbah Tamadot. When Branson decided to take over this hotel, he provided free English classes for the local community. Most of the people had never applied for a job before so they were pretty much starting from scratch. Now 90% of their staff are locals. This amazing hotel is perfectly placed in the mountains, the pool over looks the villages below and the rooms are beautiful Berber Tents.
After spending 24 hours at Bransons estate, we wanted a little adventure. We drove up the road about 15 minutes and checked into Kasbah Du Toubkal which is a trekking lodge. You have the option to take a 2 day hike to summit Toubkal ( the highest peak in North Africa ), or take a two day trek to another mountain ( the easier of the two hikes ). We didnt have the right shoes to summit a mountain so we decided to go on the second hike ( still a blood pumper! ).
The decision to do this hike was the best decision ever. Being disconnected from the outside world and internet was exactly what we needed. Each day we hiked for about 5 hours with an hour lunch that was provided for us by the guide. The first day we were surrounded by goats while eating lunch! Then we trekked for another few hours, walking through mini villages that made you feel as if you were taken back in time, and then we reached the overnight lodge. No wifi zone at this lodge. They make sure you're still engaged with your surroundings. It is so important to disconnect from everything and just be present. We get so caught up with life that we forget what really matters.
On day two of the trek, we headed back to Kasbah Du Toubkal ( with an epic lunch along the river ). This hotel makes you feel as if you're in Game of Thrones. To get to the room you had to walk down some stone stairs that made you feel as if you were walking down into a dungeon. It was epic.
